Frank Wilson talks LSU recruiting

- On the out-of-state push being made with this class:

“It’s been wonderful. I think the success we’ve had on the field this past season and the notoriety from a media standpoint has helped us tremendously. When you go out of state and see the reception that we get from kids all over the country, from as far away as even Australia to Hawaii to California to Texas to Florida, it’s wonderful. We’re very fortunate, and certainly we have a lot to offer at LSU.”

- On LSU’s two newest assistant coaches being proven recruiters:

“Those two guys, Coach Raymond as well as Coach Henry, have been great additions to our staff. First and foremost, they’re wonderful teachers and excellent football coaches that Coach Miles picked up. The second half of it, which makes you complete coaches, is that they’re great recruiters. They’re two guys with great communication skills who can relate to the prospects of present day. They go these schools and they’re able to evaluate these kids and get them on the phone to have conversations with those prospects and their parents. It’s paying dividends, the hard work and diligence by our entire staff. Early on Coach Stud started off with a roar as well as Coach Chavis … Lately the push with Coach Raymond and Coach Henry has been outstanding. We’re definitely excited to have those guys on our staff.”

- On the instant impact some of the 2012 players can have:

“With our attrition we knew that was a need position at linebacker, where guys had to come in and make immediate impacts for us. And I think we got the right guys. As far as just visiting with the kids, they’re excited about being here. They’re excited about the transition, the work-outs, and they’re working extremely hard. We’re anxious for August to roll around and us to get started with Camp to see that transition happen. We anticipate every one of them, all of the young guys, from Deion Jones to Kwon Alexander to Lorenzo Phillips, as well as the two we were very fortunate to have here during spring ball - Lamar Louis and Ronnie Feist - we think they’ll do well and we’re excited about having them. But overall, the entire signing class, I think it’ll be a very, very pleasant, I don’t want to say surprise, but reception from LSU faithful when they see how well this incoming class is performing as true freshmen.”

- On how LSU’s recruiting war room works:

“Our entire staff is aware of what our plan is that Coach Miles set forth for us. With attrition we’ve already pre-identified at each position, specifically, the target number that we’d like to be able to recruit and bring in with that class. As far as our assistants, we tell our guys to have no limit and go get ‘em. If they’re great players, don’t worry about the numbers. That’s for Coach Miles to figure all that out. (Laughing) So we don’t hold them back. We tell them if it’s a great player in their area or at their position to recruit them because we want the best players in the country to be a part of our program.”

- On how the Tigers stand with the ‘13 class as far as needs:

“When you look at where we’re at right now, we’re fitting out needs that we’ve identified. Certainly there are some spots that we need to fill at defensive end as well as defensive tackle, maybe another offensive lineman and maybe another receiver. Then there are some voids we still need to fill at the defensive back position because offenses require us to play so much nickel and dime packages. So with our allotment of numbers at those position groups, we’ve got a little work to do. But after that, we’re pretty much okay.”
