Instant Impact: Greg Gilmore

Greg Gilmore

Where will Gilmore fit into LSU's rotation next fall?

LSU landed a commitment from 2013 four-star defensive tackle Greg Gilmore. Where does Gilmore fit into the roster in Baton Rouge, and how quickly will playing time come?

    • How serious are we pursuing Bain now that we have Gilmore? Personally think we need both of them. And how good are our chances? Thanks s/s. u guys are the best in the biz for LSU.

    • Quentin Thomas and Mickey Johnson have played this year?

    • I think Gilmore is going to have an acclimation period similar to Ego Ferguson. Given that he won't be on campus until the summer, it will surprise me to see him get meaningful minutes in 2013.

Of the incoming freshmen, if one of them is going to log meaningful minutes at DT I think it will be LaCouture, provided he enrolls in January and goes through Spring drills. That will give him a chance to get acclimated to a new city and college life, go through Spring drills and work with Moffitt for a full seven months before fall camp opens up. If he can add 20lbs of muscle in the timeframe, we could be looking at a 285-290lb true frosh DT that could be useful in pass rushing situations, which is really the only time you want to have to use a true frosh DT anyway.

Basically, LSU needs to really, really hope that Quentin Thomas and Mickey Johnson are ready to play DT in the SEC next fall, because both are going to be relied upon to play a lot of minutes.

      Q. Thomas got in three games - Washington, Idaho and Towson - and has been in on an assisted tackle.

Same for Mickey Johnson, though he has appeared in only the Idaho game.

    • Thanks for the breakdown, Shea. This article shows how important a get Greg was, and, hopefully, we can add another DT for '13, and then LaCouture coming in early and potentially growing into the DT slot will be important. Also, just want to say that you, Sonny and the 247 staff do the best job possible in keeping us all updated. Thanks so much to all ya'll!

    • I don't see Mickey Johnson's body type fitting into Chavis' scheme unless he plans on using him as primarily an anchor instead of a pass rusher like he does with all 4 linemen. I couldn't see LaCouture staying at DE. He is already bigger than every DE we have on roster. He will most likely move inside.

Agree about Mickey and thought that when he was being recruited. He's better suited for a NG position that highlights his strength. I like the kid and think he can help the team but his impact is less in our scheme than it would have been in others. Came down to a situation of need at the end of his recruitment. Again I'm glad to have him and wish him well but he doesn't fit our scheme like the other guys we have. Thomas is the guy to watch if the light comes on. Kid has all that is needed to be dominant at the position. I think he's similar to Gilmore in a lot of ways.
