GREENVILLE, N.C. – Cornell Powell had a great freshman season. The Rose standout was one of his team’s key players and is looking forward to a big sophomore campaign.

Not many freshmen are able to make the jump from middle school football to the high school varsity level, but Cornell Powell was able to make an instant impact.

“It was a big difference – tempo, speed,” he said. “You have to react a lot quicker because they are bigger, stronger, and faster. I feel like I adjusted well and had a decent season. It could have been better, but I think it was pretty good.”

During his first high school season, Powell was asked to play multiple positions. The talented 2016 prospect does have a preference, but knows he will likely be asked to continue to play both.

“I prefer playing wide receiver, but I also play quarterback,” said the 6-foot, 180-pound Powell. “I think I’m better at wide receiver. Next year, I’ll probably play a mixture of both.”

Powell said he grew up following college teams such as Alabama, West Virginia, LSU, and ECU.

As for his summer plans, Powell said he would like to attend some college camps.

“I would like to go to camps at ECU and North Carolina State – just any camps that will help me get better,” he said.

Next season, Powell knows more will be expected of him.

“I just have to come in and be a leader next season, continue to work hard, and try to help us win a state championship,” he said.

Powell finished his freshman season with 498 yards passing, 211 yards rushing, 269 yards receiving, and 10 total touchdowns.

    >>>>>Good to know these young kids in Carolina are keeping up with The Tigers. You just never know if they're going to end up being the type of recruit we should be keeping up with.
