Who were the best defensive ends as a pair?
Elko/Marshall or Mingo/Montgomery?
Any others come to mind?
Marquise Hill and Marcus Spears is tough to beat....
I'll throw in a vote for Gilliard and Northern.
For rushing the passer, I think this was the best combination I can remember at LSU. For defending the run, hard to beat Spears and Hill.
IMHO, Mingo and Montgomery never quite lived up to the hype. Mingo only had one year as a full-time player, and he underwhelmed this year in that role.
The 1995 LSU starting DL consisted of Anthony McFarland, Chuck Wiley, Gabe Northern and James Gilyard. Between those four, they recorded 217 tackles, 48 TFL's and 24.5 Sacks. That was Dinardo's first season at LSU.
Compare that to this year's top 6 DL (Logan, Mingo, Montgomery, Johnson, Edwards and Downs), which recorded 195 tackles, 49.5 TFL's and 25.5 Sacks. And keep in mind that includes 3 DT's and 3 DE's in 2012, compared to just 2 of each in 1995.
