Interesting that the AD there made James Franklin the HC in waiting while she was there. I think if James Franklin goes anywhere, this will be the spot.
"That was Death Valley,". "That was the place where opponents' dreams come to die. Coach Les Miles after the LSU - South Carolina game.
I think he has fish to fry in a bigger pan.
Is that North Carolina State job a better one, a more prestigious one that Vanderbilit?
maybe, maybe not........but I think Franklin is a East Coast guy, and I think he wouldn't run off players like Russell Wilson. The way he can recruit and coach he will be successful IMO.
I agree Franklin has a future. I think he was the OC and coach-in-waiting at Maryland and spent some time at Idaho.
He's from Pennsylvania. He's had some assistant jobs al over the country.
He has done a phenominal job at Vandy.
Franklin would be dumb to take a job like NC State or Illinois like he was mentioned for last year. Why take a job where you have zero chance to be a BCS team much less play in the BCS CG? And there is no way NC State is going to do anything regardless of who the coach is.
If I were Franklin I'd maximize my compensation from Vandy and bide my time until/if a job came open in Austin, Athens, Tuscsloosa, Baton Rouge, Gainesville, etc.
Chuck Amato went 8-4, 11-3 and 8-5 and Tom O'Brien had a 9-4 and 8-5 campaign at N.C. State so I think someone like James Franklin could better himself at a place like N.C. State and make himself more appealing to the bigger jobs.
He isn't going to go 8-5 at Vandy.
Agree Sonny...ACC less stressful than SEC
Duke, North Carolina, and NCState are all in that triangle around Raleigh-Durham. Great place to live.
If Franklin can get another 7-6 or better at Vandy, I think he gets consideration for posts that open.
It's all in the timing. Franklin needs another productive year in Nashville. He's definitiely a guy to watch.
So are you saying he will win their bowl game and go 9-4 this year?
"I strive to never let the perfect be the enemy of the good. They are companions, not rivals, for our affections." -Lance Paddock
If I read things correctly Vandy will be making only their 5th bowl trip in program history this year. Franklin will be the coach responsible for 2 of those trips. I think that he'll be considered this offseason for any job that he applies for. That being said I do agree that he should bide his time for a big one IF he feels like Vandy hasn't reached it's ceiling. Sometimes you have to strike while the iron's hot. His star may fade if Vandy isn't a bowl team in 2013.

So I was messing around on the 247rumors board about coaching changes, and they said 2 names to keep an eye on would be OC Chad Morris from Clemson, and LSU's own John Chavis.....hmmmmmm
Clemson OC Chad Morris and LSU DC John Chavis are two names floating around today for the NC State job...
The mention of Chavis gets my attention.
He's a loyal guy who seems to enjoy his current station. Does he want to be a head coach? He's a native of South Carolina and a Vol graduate and he was enormously successful with Fulmer.
I could see him returning to Knoxville if the situation and monies were tempting.
North Carolina State could be a less stressful setting. The bar at LSU continues to get higher and the competition is getting tougher - look at, perhaps, five openings in the SEC this year and two or more last year. That's a 50% turnover in two years.
You made me go back and look at Vandy's record and I didn't realize they finished 8-4 so good stuff all of you.
You have to wonder, though, how often they will catch an SEC West school down like they caught Auburn this year and whether some new blood will get Tennessee turned around.
Next year they replace Auburn with Texas A&M so that's a much tougher task.
I like Franklin a lot and I had the opportunity to hear him give a presentation for about an hour and a half and I think he has a big-time program written all over him. I would love to see him get his shot now.
