Slow day so I thought I would put this out there for discussion. My buddy and I were talking about the nightmare that is Auburn right now and I mentioned what I thought was the insane rumor coming from the Plains about bringing in Jimbo Fisher.
Said buddy has a friend who is directly involved in coaching circles in that area: his family had been long-term inhabitants of Chapel Hill under Mack Brown all the way until recently. All that to say that his family has heard pretty reliably that Fisher and his family are pretty heavily at odds with the powers that be in Tallahassee. It sounds like they don't care for his whiney attitude he doesn't care for their meddling.
So, who knows.....this is a pretty reliable and well-connected source without a dog in the fight so I thought tht was an interesting bit of information that I wanted to share for some discussion. Thoughts? Anyone else with connections heard similar things?
As someone pointed out earlier, such an easier path to a championship at FSU. He's recruiting like crazy. Would be surprised to see him leave. That said, Craig is still his top recruiter right? That, plus his background with the Sec certainly make him a viable candidate.
The coaching carousel that is about to begin will certainly be interesting.
Yeah if he brought Craig that could be a scary recruiting combo with SEC resources.
But I just can't believe he would leave for the Plains because that program may not even be recognizable in a few years. I'd make for damn sure that they had everything settled before I took that job. Now.....maybe he would be more interested in a place like Texas or Tennessee...
Fisher is getting his FSU program in place to own the ACC for a while. I would be VERY surprised to see him try to revive Auburn, or Tennessee for that matter. Those are both monumental tasks to overcome a somewhat clandestine Auburn way of getting recruits, and the totally beat down for the last 6 years or more Vol fan base.
The only person I hear Texas might go for is Saban. And that talk has died down with Texas looking at a chance to go 9-3 this year. 10-2 if they somehow rise above their entitled selves and beat K-State.
Regards to All,
Appreciate the post.
There's always something of substance to those rumors.
Another coach who could move to a larger program is Dan Mullen, if his State team finishes with two more wins,
Question for these administrators looking for changes - are their enough viable candidates with the right stuff?
Who's avaialble? John Gruden, Houston Nutt, Tommy Tuberville, Cutliffe, Chrs Peterson, Sonny Dykes?
Chizik and Joker Phillips will catch on somewhere.
Is Gruden actually available? I hear his name every year and never see anything of substance to lewd me to believe someone could pull that off.
If I'm leading a search committee, my first phone call is probably to Charlie Strong. Cutcliffe is also appealing to me.
I'm not convinced that Chizik deserves to catch on somewhere personally.
Love this time of year.
OldIowa, Stong and Cutliffe would be strong choices.
Something else on the Florida State situation - when Jimbo Fisher received his last raise, there was a lot of public criticism from faculty members who were angry they didn't get a raise.
What these guys don't know is that in this society a coach with a NC pulls more influence, money, and press that faculty with four new Pultzer prizes.and the cure for cancer.
Of course 99.9% of college professors don't win Pultitzers much less do something with societal value like cure diseases. In fact most of them darken a classroom less than 5 hours a week.
