I'm sorry but I think this is very mehhh.....Tom Benson couldn't find a better name to go with New Orleans than Pelicans. What NBA star wants to go around saying I'm a Pelican?? SMH.
"That was Death Valley,". "That was the place where opponents' dreams come to die. Coach Les Miles after the LSU - South Carolina game.
what player wants to say they're a lake? a rocket? a spur? a magic? a hawk? a heat? wish we could have the jazz back, but i'm glad they're trying to assimilate the franchise to the local culture. hornets is just as dumb as pelicans but at least it has some connection to the state.

Why not the "Surge"?
Complete utter failure by the Hornets organization. There is no way the team should not be called the Krewe if they are going to change the name.
The New Orleans Pelicans is one of the worst names in the history of professional sports. I can hear it now though that the fans wil end up just referring to them as he "Cans" instead of the whole name which really defeats the purpose of a new name.
Can't wait to see the Pelicanettes' shaking their butts all over the court during timeouts ... haha

thank god no one ever referred to the nola football team as the 'aints'...i guess they should have just kept the awesome name they came with
It's not like any NBA stars were wanting to call themselves Hornets either...
Nothing will ever make more sense than the Jazz.

In that regard - I just can't understand why they didn't go with the New Orleans BRASS.
Heck just drop the mascots entirely. Never seemed to hurt the big soccer clubs like ManU and Real Madrid. We have the Lakers (from Minn) in Los Angeles and the Jazz (NOLA) in Utah. Maybe Benson should just keep the idiotic trend going and name them the Yankees.
"It's short of larceny. It's surely not bigamy, but there is some lack of integrity that somebody can go in and bang on," Les Miles
I really don't care for Krewe at all. While it has the local tie, it's a pretty weak name and not many outside the immediate area would even know the meaning. Not a huge fan of Pelicans either, but I think they could do far worse. Would have preferred something like Buccaneers or VooDoo over what they've come up with, but with the names I've heard mentioned I would be perfectly fine with them just keeping Hornets.
