If we have to use him this year it would be due to Mett going down, likely to for continued poor pass protection and the fact Rivers is as susceptible to the rush as Mett is. We would see him as soon as Rivers had 2 or 3 three and outs and there goes any red shirt hopes for this year.
LSU OL and overall pass protection needs to get better and keep Mett healthy or the team is in trouble.
I am not particularly high on Bolden at all. Maybe part of his problem was poor OL execution at Penn State and it affected his accuracy. Our OL is not a strong point right now, particularly against better SEC DL's to face.
LSU WR's have not helped either with a high percentage of drops. I am not sure if RB hasn't stepped onto our team in the same scenario in which he left PSU. PSU offense was substandard for the B10 when he played, and for now, the LSU pass protection is substandard for the higher level of ability SEC foes. Only LSU running game is comparatively speaking better than the PSU squad Bolden started for. Problem is, SEC defense DL's are good and can stack against the run better overall than Bolden's PSU foes. SEC defense can and will at least hold in check the run game when they load up front. Don't know that Bolden is good enough to overcome the OL and WR pass protection and pass catching problems to make an effective pass game should our running game get stymied. Similar situation, IMO, that he would be thrust into here as at PSU. Our run game might make him look better but not the pass game...currently. Like most QB's, Bolden looked ineffective, and harried when under pressure in the games I saw at PSU and he mostly certainly will be under pressure in this conference from the outset.
Hope Bolden redshirts, OL improves, WR improves and Mett plays...All year...
Regards to All,
I have more confidence in Rivers than most people, I guess. I think the kid can do the job if called upon. His delivery looks much improved since high school and he's got plenty of velocity on his throws. From the limited sample size I've seen of him, he may have a stronger arm than his brother (though arm strength has never been his brother's calling card). Plus, he's been in the LSU system for almost as long as Mettenberger at this point.
I don't think it was a mistake to take Bolden - we badly needed depth this year and next because it's become pretty clear that Randall isn't in the coaches' plans.
