What's the story on Thompson? I had high hopes for him and while he did play Special Teams a lot this year, he flew under the radar. Coming out I saw him very similar to Eric Reid in terms of size and being a smart guy/QB of the defense. I hoped he'd solidify his spot as a starter for next year by now but no one is talking about him. Any info?
Only one starting Safety position open in 2013 and he'll battle Ronnie Martin, Sandolph and Eugene for that spot in the Spring. My guess is he becomes Loston's primary backup in 2013 and takes over that spot in 2014.

I am with TigerNE here.
I think because of his experience and what he's show in spots, Ronald Martin gets the job this spring with Craig Loston. They are backed up by Thompson and Sandolph. Not sure I see Eugene moving into that pure safety role. He's better suited elsewhere.
I like Thompson a lot, and I think because of the Landon Collins fiasco, people forgot that LSU ended up landing a pretty good safety in that class. He's got size and showed some good speed this year on special teams. I think he is the one to press Martin for the starting spot, but right now, I think he is the first guy in off the bench.

I agree with you and Shea here. I see Thompson taking over at strong safety when Loston leaves. He's a big hitter and better suited for that role than free safety.
I think he he has a lot of playing to do in front of him. He is very good at ST, is a big hitter and has sufficient speed. Like S/S and others have said, I see him being Loston's replacement when that time comes.
Is it looking like Eugene will end up as the nickel back or possibly dime? Does he have the coverage skills to become a full-time CB?

He didn't in 2012.
I thought I read that chavis didn't have specific free or ss and that his scheme calls for both safeties to be versed to do multiple things. They both are simply noted as "S". If I am mistaken, who would back up Martin at the free slot.

Eugene looked completely lost everytime I saw him on the field. I know that they want to get him in the backfield like they did with TM, but he was completely ineffective at actually making a play when they sent him. In coverage, he was a mess.

Mathieu was the master of blitzing from the Nickel spot. People saw him do it and thought it was easy, but not all DB's have the guts and aggressiveness for it.
