Also said they would be switching to the 3-4 defense. Could be a place Keke Mingo could end up.

Bama friend texted me "Saints could hire Kirby Smart" lol

I am so glad he's gone. I think we have a few decent pieces for the 3-4. We need a nose tackle though
Think Hicks can man the nose? He's big enough...
He's got to be on the field somewhere. He played well. I think Cam would make a nice 3-4 end. Maybe this could help Vilma stay around? Have you seen any mocks lately? Any chance Jarvis Jones falls?
Well, he'll only fall if his medicals don't check out.

For awhile I thought the Saints weren't too many pieces away from a 3-4 defense. Cam Jordan came out of college projected to go to a 3-4 rather than a 4-3 and Will Smith is no longer a pass rushing threat as he has gotten much bigger throughout the years. Martez Wilson would make an ideal hybrid OLB.
That looks like a solid starting front 7 and depth can be built through FA and the draft. Vilma can play OLB and can come in during long yardage situations.
"That was Death Valley. It's where opponent's dreams come to die." - Miles
Is smith going to be back? I thought he had a team option. That really isn't a bad front 7. I'd still like another NT and a OLB maybe Mingo if he falls? The biggest hole to me is S.
Mingo won't fall all the way to 15.
Honestly, I think the Saints should move up and take one of the elite edge guys like a Jarvis Jones or Keke. However, I think Dion Jordan will be there for us but I really like Ezekiel Ansah, such a raw talent but runs like a deer and has a good motor.
"They're on our left, they're on our right, they're in front of us, they're behind us....They can't get away this time." Chesty Puller
I agree, Safety is definitely a sore spot... saw someone suggest on another site that the Saints and Ed Reed may have some mutual interest for a short-term contract... then we can move Jenkins to SS and Reed would play a "Darren Sharper-like" role for the next 2 seasons or so
I would think Bunkley would get first shot at the nose since he played it in Denver before we got him last year, I think he was very effective in the scheme. I think Will Smith will be a cap casualty. Maybe Hicks at DE? I think Hicks will be good for us I just didn't see enough of him last year. We are about 15 mill over the cap. We would have to cut a lot of people to explore free agency. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out.
I support LSU players in the NFL but if given a choice between Jarvis Jones or Keke, I wouldn't think twice about it. Jarvis Jones would be the easy pick. That would be a great pick if he's still available. However, I don't think either will be there by pick 15.
I can't see Hicks at DE because he is massive at 6'5" 325 pounds. I wish we had 6'4" 350 pound Shaun Rogers around for another season for this transition. He would be a nice fit at NT.

Oh absolutely: Jones is the best talent in the draft IMO. I know that neiter of them will be there past 8 which is why I said we should move up.
I think we should stay at the current spot and go defensive BPA. I want the full allotment of draft picks to fill so many holes.
That's fine for a defensive end in a 3-4 alignment. Especially because he's a really good athlete..putting him at Nose doesn't really fit his skill set imo. He's a really really good athlete, having him just kind of sop up blockers in the middle of the line isn't doing him justice.
He could be a Richard Seymour type player in a 3-4 alignment if he maxes out on that potential..Seymour is about the same size as him and he's been a dominant 3-4 end for a long time now.
Looking at it now it actually might make more sense to move back and take Jesse Williams from Bama, but Ansah from BYU makes even more sense now staying at our current position. We would just need a nose tackle later in the draft or have to get one in FA.
I was going to reply back to you coldwings but someone already replied back with what I was thinking. This all depends on whether are not Will Smith is let go.

We actually have the some view about Hicks. I remember watching his highlights after the saints drafted him and his was very agile for a big man. I guess time will tell but if Will Smith gets let go I would atleast think Hicks would get a shot.
Some updates on possible DC candidates:
The New Orleans Times-Picayune mentions Winston Moss, Ken Norton Jr., and Ed Donatell as three names to watch for the Saints' defensive-coordinator vacancy.
Moss is a former Saints assistant who is currently assistant head coach/LBs coach with the Packers. Norton Jr. is the linebackers coach with the Seahawks and has coached under Pete Carroll since 2004. Donatell, the 49ers DBs coach, has been mentioned as a front-runner for the Eagles' DC opening. Head coach Sean Payton has said he's in no hurry to name a replacement for Steve Spagnuolo, while he also said they could tap into the college ranks in their search for a new defensive boss.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that the Saints will consider adding Eric Mangini and Romeo Crennel to their 2013 defensive staff.
Schefter suggests Crennel and Mangini "could go together" to New Orleans, with one serving as defensive coordinator. Crennel and Mangini have familiar backgrounds as Bill Parcells and Bill Belichick disciples, respectively. They were both on staff when Belichick's Patriots won three Super Bowls.
-- Also heard Lovie Smith's name mentioned... but I didnt think he ran a 3-4?
