So with all the starters going pro, can someone give us a prediction of what the starting lineup would look like next year on D?
It might look something like this:
DL: Hunter, Rasco, Ego, Freak
LB: Barrow, T. Jones, Alexander
DB: Mills, Collins, Loston, Thompson
Lot of athleticism, a little short on experience.
I think Martin starts before Thompson, but if Loston goes pro they both will be starting.
DE Hunter so.
DE Rasco jr.
DT Johnson jr.
DT Ferguson jr.
OLB Alexander so.
MLB Barrow sr.
OLB T. Jones sr.
CB Mills so.
CB Collins so.
Nickel Eugene so.
SS Loston sr.
FS Thompson so
I think Thompson beats out Martin. Just a better player with the range to play FS but also play SS if Loston leaves. The starting group is fine to me. Depth is the issue.
Allen-Les raves about him but when do we see it?
Maclin-never gonna be a big contributor imo
Herron-young and is he ready?
Neal-situational and young
Lacouture-the guy that may be most important but he's young and is he too big
Scary unless Allen and Maclin really show something we haven't seen so far. The freshmen are alwyas a big unknown but we're gonna need 1- of them to step up
Thomas-hear great things and love the potential but is he ready for that next stage? Gonna have to be
Johnson-can a solid run stuffer/rotation guy but to me he just doesn't fit us. I hope I'm wrong. Regardless he needs to be ready
Gilmore-freshman and raw. Is he ready?
Lawson-too raw and needs to redshirt
Bain-physically ready and I think could suprise by playing but he's extremely raw
Lacouture-gonna need some bulk but he can help at worst.
All depends on the youngsters who are all unproven. Not a good situation at all. We're talented but raw and young
Deion Jones-I trust him especially with another spring and summer to get more disciplined
Muncie-does he still fit our plans and if so, where? I liked him at times this year but can he hold off the youngsters?
Phillips-can he step up and be a kid that challenges the other young kids. I have doubts. I sincerely wish he were 225-230 and could play rush end. His skillset is perfect for that
Louis-really impressed me and I expect him to be a good player. Can he help in the middle too?
Welter-I don't expect anything from him. Maybe he suprises me
Feist-does he step up and challenge for the starting MLB spot? I like him long term and think he'll be good for depth next year
Beckwith-biggest question of all the recruits but all for good reasons. Does he spin down and play DE where he can impact right away? I think he should. Can he challenge the youngsters at OLB? Can but does he really fit there? I have doubts. Can he be the answer in the middle? I don't see why not. He has the size and his downhill style is what MLBs are meant to do. He's a leader and I think if he plays LB the middle is the best fit for me
Melvin Jones-another that has lots of questions. Does he play LB and keep his size in check? Does he play DE where I think he can play immediately? Does he bulk all the way to DT? Regardless, the biggest issue is can he play next year?
I love the LB position for the 1st time in years. We're set here.
Thomas-can he play CB at this level or is S his best fit? Is he ready to play?
Raymond-I'm a huge fan of his talent(simialr to Robinson in terms of pure natural potential) but is he ready to play?
White-gonna play a lot and gonna play well. No doubts
Robinson-too small but I could see him playing
Jefferson-I tihink he can help right away.
Brazil-I think offense but regardless, he isn't helping at CB next year
Love the talent and potential but it's an extremely young group. Will be excellent at times and excrutiatingly frustrating at times
Martin-I trust him to play. Think he's a natural playmaker
Eugene-don't think he is a good option at S but can provide depth
Concerning unless a CB or 2 move over and help. Can't afford any injuries at all and shows how much we need Priest Willis. I don't care how much the staff like Willis at CB, his skillset is better at S and the need is bigger at S.
Overall I think we can be good for the most part. Dominant at times, just good at times and frankly bad at times. Gonna be an inconsistent year from this group. When all positions click at the same time they'll be scary good. Can't afford injuries or lapses or we better be able to score in the 30s and 40s consistently. One thing that concerns me the most is that I don't see that group of kids that is gonna outphysical teams like we're used to doing. Our current construction of players on defense is more finesse, athletic driven than strength and just blow through you type guys. That's fine against most of the teams we'll play but 2 games are gonna challenge that physicality, UF and Bama. Are these guys ready for the physical nature of those 2 teams? We'll see
Proud to support everything Louisiana
Only change i would make is I think Sandolph will push Martin at FS and I think Thompson is a SS and will back Poppa unless he starts because Loston leaves.
I also wonder with the near desperation to sign a big JUCO WR whether from a need/depth standpoint why there wasn't a similar urgency for a DE or DT/DE combo from the JuCO ranks?
+1 Va ... Great analysis
We are getting together tomorrow to go over post-season football plans and this will be one of the pieces we do in the coming days.
DE: Jermauria Rasco, Danielle Hunter
DT: Anthony Johnson, Bennie Logan (if Logan goes pro, then Ego Ferguson or Quentin Thomas)
OLB: Tahj Jones, Kwon Alexander
MLB: Lamin Barrow
CB: Jalen Mills, Tre'Davious White
S: Craig Loston, Ronald Martin (if Loston goes pro, then Corey Thompson)

Can Tre'davious White enroll early? I think they should reevaluate who should enroll early.
