I know we grad 2 and lost two others lost to draft but I mean, this class could potentially have 5 or 6 DE's in it. Unless I am casting some recruits in the wrong role?
Why so many???
The current DE's are Frank Herron, Lewis Neal and Michael Patterson. Christian LaCouture is likely going to move inside to DT.
And when you look at the depth chart there are a lot of unproven guys after Jarmauria Rasco, who still has to prove he can do it on a consistent basis.
But after Rasco., you have in a random order:
Quentin Thomas DT/DE

Herron (could grow into a DT IMO.)
With potential to add another name or two
Some of these new systems really wear those big boys out. You chase Johnny football around for 3 quarters and you have nothing in the forth, and he runs all over you. With a good rotation, you keep the guys fresh, which decreases fatigue and injury...Also, we run a system where some teams run 80-100 plays against us...thats not good, and hopefully our offense comes around, but until then....load up on D-line....
Only three true DE in this class IMO--Herron, Neal and Patterson. LaCouture is bound for DT, as would be Nkemdiche or Bower. Beckwith will at least get a shot first at OLB. Then again, Herron could possibly bulk into a DT, Neal could play FB and Patterson might be athletic enough for OLB, too.
I really like the versatility we have in this DL class.
The only proven DE on the roster is Rasco and he's a going to be a junior. Allen is coming off an injury/has never played meaningful snaps and Maclin hasn't done anything since he's been here. Hunter is completely unproven.
The staff wants LaCouture to bulk up and play DT so I wouldn't count him in your DE numbers. This defensive line class is exactly what this team needed and could afford to have one or two more join the group.
Why are people down on Rasco? I like him a lot. I think he's just as talented as the two first round guys leaving this year. He's only going to be a Jr and was the 5th DE last year.
I think Hunter may be a player too. Not sold on Maclin or Allen.

Thanks Guys that clears alot up for me.
As for Neal. Read he is a beast!
What is his accurate measurments?
Who is down on him?
"They're on our left, they're on our right, they're in front of us, they're behind us....They can't get away this time." Chesty Puller
I dont think anyone is down on Rasco... I've seen most people say that he is the only proven DE on our roster. I think he will be very good next year, but we do not know who will start opposite of him. We also rotate 3-4 DE's, so we really need at least 2 guys to step up out of Hunter, Allen, and Maclin... because I dont think we will get much contribution from Neal or Patterson their first year. Herron and/or Nkemdiche (if we land them) could possibly come in and play right away, but we cant count on that right now
Proud to support everything Louisiana
Not me. I think he's going to be a monster. He should have a breakout year. I think Hunter is the question mark on whether he has out it all together or not. We also need Freak to really step up too.
I saw Rasco put in some valuable time this year. Really was solid depth. I think he will be nasty next year with our tendency to develop at that position.
(I am bit biased being a ECA grad) LOL
I think Hunter has a high ceiling but I question if he has the size to be an every down player at DE next season. He's listed at 235, but looks about 210 to me. He needs to add 20 or 30 lbs. Everyone saying that we need Allen and Maclin to step up are correct. I don't remember much about Allen from 2011, but I remember watching Maclin playing and not being very impressed.
Agree, I really think one of the freshman will have to contribute. My early bet is Lewis Neal and Frank Herron. I don't have much faith in Allen or Maclin.
Rasco just needs some PT under the full heat of competition and some series in row to show what he can do when he figures it out. I think he is VERY talented. Very.
Hunter is the wildcard here. He looks fast in the preseason workouts and he supposedly has a mean streak. He needs reps like Mingo got when he came on board. Not saying Hunter is a Mingo, I am saying we won't know till he earns the right to get time out there. I think his time may be coming this year and I would love to see a dominant pass rush out of him...Not down at all on Hunter.
You are correct to this point about Maclin, who if he can't earn time this year, may be a '14 attrition guy looking for a program to play.
Don't know about Allen either. He had some good write ups early last year. Didn't see him play much AND he got hurt. He needs to step it up if he is viable. Some of these new guys are definitely viable.
Regards to All,
Of all the DE's Allen is the guy with the prototypical size at 6'6" 260. This is his year to make his mark!
He will definitely have the opportunity. I have my money on Hunter.
Agree 100% with this CDCNAM. Rasco and Hunter are going to be next in the continuing line of great DEs to come through Baton Rouge.
After watching Frank Herron in the All star game, I'm not sure he doesn't also move inside at some point. He sure looked like he could grow into a tackle in a couple of years...
I would not count out JA to give us some GOOD minutes this year. I'm excited about Rasco, HUNTER and ALL of the projected signees with a potential to add 1-2 more!!!
"It's my hometown, and that's big for me," Henry said. "It's about playing for the home team in front of family
We need all of the DL recruits we have committed to us because of the way we rotate DL in and out of the game for the purpose of keeping them fresh. We need 5-6 contributing DEs and 5-6 contributing DTs to play the system we have in place. We need every one of these young recruits to sign, and be ready to play next year. Consider them on a 3-year plan.
Neal is a shade under 6-0 and in that 230-pound range. He doesn't look the part of a DE on the hoof but this is one of those cases where looks are deceiving.
I agree on Rasco. Hunter seems to be the other choice. I believe jordan Allen will serve lsu well next year. I recall reading some great reports on him in practice before he was hurt. That leaves 1 spot in rotation for Maclin or an incoming frosh like Herron.
