Kevin Minter & Butkus Award

  • LSU linebacker Kevin Minter has been named one of five finalists for the Butkus Award, which is given each year to the top linebacker in college football, the Butkus Foundation announced on Tuesday.

Minter, a junior from Suwanee, Ga., is joined on the list of finalists by Jarvis Jones of Georgia, Dion Jordan of Oregon, C.J. Mosley of Alabama and Manti Te’o of Notre Dame.

In 11 games this year, Minter has recorded a team-high 101 tackles and been name the Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Week two times. In addition to his 101 tackles, Minter leads the Tigers with 13.5 tackles for loss to go along with 3.0 sacks, five pass breakups, four quarterback hurries, one interception and one force fumble.

Minter had 20 tackles, including a school-record 17 solo stops, in a 14-6 loss to Florida as he earned his first SEC Player of the Week honor. The 20 tackles rank as the second highest total in school history and the most for an LSU player since 1988.

Minter earned three national defensive player of the week honors for his performance against Texas A&M when the Tigers limited Johnny Manziel, a front-runner for the Heisman Trophy, to just 27 rushing yards to go with three interceptions. Minter had 12 tackles, one sack, an interception, two quarterback hurries and a pass breakup in the 24-19 win over the Aggies.

The finalists were selected by a panel of 51 coaches, scout and journalists with the winner of the 2012 award being announced in the first week of December.

The Butkus Award is part of the National College Football Awards Association, a coalition of the major collegiate awards. More information is available at www.NCFAA.org.

  • Congtatulations to Minter!

That is a really impressive group of finalists. I think Te'o wins out over Jones.

  • Great honor for Minter! Too bad it was with these other finalists though. Te'o has played lights out for Notre Dame. And he has the story to go with it.

  • Teo and Jones were brand names before the season even started and they backed up their status with their play. I do not see Minter winning the Butkus Award unless he does something ridiculous like record back-to-back 20 tackle games or return a couple of INT's for TD's.

  • I think it's going to be hard for anyone to beat Teo with all of the hype and love Notre Dame is getting.

What impresses me so much with Teo is he has 6 INTs on the year. Crazy for a backer that big to be as good in pass coverage as he is.

Teo is an impressive specimen but he does benefit from being on an undefeated ND team and the "overcoming obstacles" tag that media gave him. If I was a GM of an NFL team and had to choose him or Jarvis Jones, I would take Jones. JJ is a freak athlete and can play in the 3-4 or 4-3.

You don't think he earned that tag?

He did and it is giving him a big boost in popularity. The point I'm making is that I still think Jones is the better prospect even if Teo gets the award.

I get that, and I agree that Jones is a better and more versatile pro prospect. Just when you say the media gave it to him, it sort of sounds resentful, like he didn't earn it. Plus just for purposes of the Butkus, Te'o has been more productive and more consistent than Jones this season.
