So its starts again...SEC conference expansion

  • Kyle Bailey ‏@TheClubhouseKB

#Hokies AD Jim Weaver says there "may be potential interest" in talking with the #SEC about future membership. Defers comment otherwise.

Supposedly this comment was made by the Hokie AD during a weekly call in show. I believe the SEC will be 16 teams by 2014.

  • Va Tech and UNC would be nice T.V. Markets to be apart of and a lot of tradition if we added UNC to our sports...

  • UVa and UNC in the east division and move Mizzou to the west. NC and Va would be great additions for recruiting.

  • I don't see UNC and NC State in different conferences, but the pair might be a nice addition to the SEC.

From a revenue viewpoint, however, together they equal one just more TV market, so that probably would not fly.

Would sure be a plus for SEC basketball, though.

  • There is this I was just reading on Orangebloods.com from Chip Brown.

Keep your ears open for rumblings out of the SEC about a push that could include Alabama with support from Texas A&M and Missouri to get Florida and Georgia to relent on their opposition to adding Florida State and Georgia Tech.

Louisville has been ringing the Big 12's doorbell since realignment started, but now could be a candidate to replace Maryland in the ACC. The Big 12 has done studies that show schools such as Louisville and Cincinnati don't move the meter enough in terms of television, so there is no interest in those additions at this time.

The ACC outfoxed the Big 12 to get Notre Dame. Could the SEC outfox the Big 12 to get Florida State and Georgia Tech?

Would the Seminoles and Yellow Jackets be open to such moves?

The fact that we are even asking these questions tells you that realignment is back and everyone better be on their toes.

  • Also read that the SEC is getting a SEC network in style of the Big 10 and and Pac 12 network by 2014. That would be pretty cool.

  • Why would the SEC want FSU and GT. they bring absolutely nothing. No new markets. GT does not bring many fans or any prestige. Cannot see FSU bringing anything since we already have Fl covered. Va or NC but they would have. $50 million buyout as would GT and FSU.

    Alaman

  • Who else brings something to the SEC? Unc, nc st, uva are the heart of the acc and are not going anywhere. There are really no other markets to open IMO. The only viable candidates are miami, fsu, clemson and ga tech.

    I totally agree, Alaman.

We already have the Atlanta and North Florida markets covered, so it would make zero sense to consider either of those schools.

Although Florida State would provide competition in the SECe, college football is all about the arms race now, and TV $$$ prevail.

Two more teams in new, viable TV markets makes ultimate sense, and the potential additional revenue from our TV contracts could be outrageous. NC and the DC markets are huge; I believe we will go after them.

I believe D1 college football will soon consist of four 16-team conferences, so we should be careful to ensure that we wrap up the best TV markets available.

  • I disagree.. FSU would bring a TON to the SEC... Just my opinion and agree to disagree but FSU is BIG TIME and would bring a ton of attention and make this conference absolutely insane with talent.

  • UNC Chapel Hill and VATech would open huge markets and increased national interest.

VaTech brings the whole D.C. market into it. The D.C. market is why the Big 10 took Maryland.
Tech's a good school academically and that would be a completely new market for the SEC.

Also opens up the Southeastern Virginia recruiting area which is known as “The 757″ or "Hampton Roads." Includes 247's current #1, #2 & #6 prospects for 2014.

This assumes that people in DC actually give a crap about VA Tech (or Maryland for that matter). It's a transplant town. The only local teams that matter are pro sports.

The conference could expand in the other direction.

Or maybe LSU, Arkansas, Ole Miss & MSU could join the Big XII.

With Delany suggesting "Demographics" as his incentive for adding Maryland and New Jersey to the Big Ten.....sounds like expansion being driven by political motivations along party lines.
